LGA selected as finalist for Prix Versailles

By Wendy Morley

LaGuardia Airport’s new Terminal B has been selected as a finalist for the Prix Versailles Airports 2021, an annual award issued by the prestigious architecture and design organization that operates under the auspices of UNESCO.

Spacious, bright, filled with iconic public art and featuring world-class amenities – the new LGA Terminal B has earned its fair share of accolades from travelers and reviewers alike across the region and the country

This is a far cry from the terminal’s famous “third world” status bestowed upon LaGuardia by then-Vice President Joe Biden.

The World Judges Panel selects the most beautiful airports and/or terminals based on these criteria: innovativeness, creativity, reflection of local heritage and energy efficiency. LaGuardia’s Terminal B, which opened in June 2020, is one of six finalists for the 2021 airport award and the only American contender. Last year’s winner was Beijing Daxing Airport.

While the US was the global forerunner in passenger air travel, the rebuilt LaGuardia is the first new airport built in the United States in more than 25 years. The goal when Governor Cuomo’s vision was unveiled six years ago was to build an airport on par with the great new airports being continuously developed around the world, and its inclusion as a Prix Versailles finalist is further proof that this goal is being reached.
