Continued growth for land border sales in Canada

Continuing a growth trend that began earlier this year, Canadian land border sales for June were up 5% to nearly CAD$16 million.

Airport duty free sales in Canada posted an increase of 6% or CAD$45.5 million compared to June 2017. Overall sales for January/June are up 6.8% compared to the same period in 2017.

The Pacific region sales grew 6% to nearly CAD$2.3 million compared to the same period in 2017. For January/June 2018 the Pacific region sales were over CAD$10.6 million, up nearly 7% compared to the same period in 2017.

The Prairie region sales were up 4.7% or nearly CAD$800,000 compared to the same period in 2017. For January/June 2018, the Prairie region sales were over CAD$39 million, up almost 4% compared to the same period in 2017.

The Ontario region sales saw a slight increase of just over 2% or nearly CAD$8.8 million compared to the same period in 2017. For January/June, Ontario region sales were over CAD$36 million, a slight increase compared to the same period in 2017.

The main categories that dominated sales in land border duty free in June 2018 were as follows (in order of highest to lowest).

  • Alcohol (liquor, wine, coolers)
  • Tobacco, Cigars, Loose Tobacco
  • Perfume, Cosmetics, Skincare
  • Food
  • Beer (beer, malt-based coolers)
  • Jewellery, Watches, Clocks
  • Accessories (purses, wallets, sunglasses, etc.)
  • Clothing (including hats, fur, leather)
  • Souvenirs
  • Office and Travel Supplies
  • Other
  • Electronics, Cameras, Binoculars, etc.
  • Glassware, crystal, china, figurines, porcelain
  • Crafts/Arts
