Canada-US border to reopen Aug 9
After 17 months, the Canada-US border will reopen to nonessential traffic on August 9, for fully vaccinated travelers only
After months of appeal from the tourism industry, from those wishing to travel and from communities on either side of the border, Canada has finally announced the opening of the border to fully vaccinated Americans for non-essential travel as of August 9. While no such statement has been made by the US government, as it was following Canada’s lead on reopening because of a bilateral agreement, it is fully expected that the US will follow suit. The US has accepted Canadians via air throughout the pandemic, though not at land borders.
In early February, international flights into Canada were halted to all but four airports.
Travelers fully vaccinated at least 14 days before arriving at the Canadian border will not need to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival, but they will still need to register with the ArriveCAN app or web portal. Visitors might also be randomly selected to receive a post-arrival COVID test.
Five more international airports will be accepting flights under the new measures, and assuming all goes well, Canada will open its borders to fully vaccinated individuals from other countries beginning on September 7.
The Tourism Industry Association of Canada (TIAC), of which Canada’s land border association FDFA is a member,welcomed the announcement.
“TIAC has been tirelessly advocating for a science-based plan for reopening our borders and restarting our visitor economy,” said Beth Potter, President & CEO of TIAC. “International tourism is crucial to stimulating international trade and foreign investment. We are pleased that the federal government has communicated an evidence-based plan to reopen the borders and restart travel. We are delighted to hear the start of this phased approach today.”
