Nederburg wins Best Cabernet Sauvignon in the World trophy

By Jas Ryat

South Africa’s Nederburg has won the 2016 International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) trophy for the best Cabernet Sauvignon in the world.

The award went to the 2013 vintage of the Paarl-based winery’s Private Bin R163 Cabernet Sauvignon.

“Cabernet Sauvignon as a variety offers winemakers a wonderful chance to tell the story of a vineyard site,” said Nederburg Cellar Master Andrea Freeborough. “It also offers the potential to produce wines of remarkable depth, intensity and length of flavor that can age with consummate grace.”

Fruit for this wine was sourced exclusively from the best Paarl vineyards. The wine was aged in French, Hungarian and American oak for 18 months.

“It expresses an abundance of black and red fruit, along with hints of chocolate and mocha and some savory notes of tobacco, pencil shavings and even tar, adding interest and dimension,” said Freeborough.

The handmade wine is produced for exclusive sale at the annual Nederburg Auction, with only 1,200 liters bottled, and is made to mature over decades.

The 2013 vintage also earned a gold medal at the 2016 Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards.

In other news, a one-off ensemble of Nederburg Private Bin R163 Cabernet Sauvignons, from 2001 to 2010, was offered as part of a charity auction line-up at the recent 2016 Nederburg Auction. Described by the winery as a unique expression of Nederburg’s history, but also of new thinking, it fetched R60,000 (US$4,300) for 10 750ml bottles.
