Qatar Airways and Hamad International Airport collaborate for IATA's pilot program

By Hibah Noor

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has announced Qatar Airways and Doha's Hamad International Airport's participation in two key industry programs designed to enhance security and improve passenger convenience.

The Smart Security project is a joint initiative between IATA and Airports Council International (ACI) and is geared towards increasing operational efficiency at airport checkpoints. The program, which is already in operation at Amsterdam-Schiphol and London-Heathrow, employs advanced screening technology to strengthen security and speed up passenger movement.

The latter is a key rationale behind the implementation of the Fast Travel campaign, with the program offering travellers a number of self-service options -- including check-in, baggage check, flight rebooking, self-boarding, and baggage recovery. Hamad is also in the process of implementing a sixth Fast Travel option, which will allow passengers to scan their own travel documents.

"Qatar Airways and Hamad International Airport are committed to giving passengers the best experience possible," says Qatar CEO Akbar Al Baker. "To do that we are working in close partnership to give our passengers the self-service options that they increasingly expect."

The program has already proven beneficial for Qatar Airways, as the company was awarded the Fast Travel Green Award at the conclusion of the IATA Annual General Meeting and World Air Transport Summit in Doha, Qatar.
